WHILE YOU'RE IN THE NEIGHBHORHOOD
After the high-tech of Space Camp, you'll find a reprieve at a 19th-century hard-
ware store in downtown Huntsville. Harrison Brothers Hardware, founded in 1879
by a couple of brothers and added to the National Register of Historic Places in
1980, is stocked from floorboards to high ceilings with all kinds of stuff, from
old-fashioned tools to Raggedy Ann dolls to jars of stick candy. You reach the
tiny numbered drawers on tall rolling ladders or a rope elevator that's operated
by hand. A potbellied stove warms the store in winter. Harrison Brothers Hard-

In fact, it was von Braun himself who first concocted the notion of a space camp. He
figured, there were summer camps for everything from music to tennis to karate, so why
not get kids pumped up about science by giving them a glimpse into astronaut training? His
scheme obviously worked. Since 1982 when it was launched, going to Huntsville to attend
Space Camp has been almost as much a rite of passage as going to Orlando to shake hands
with Mickey and Minnie. The adult camps were added in 1985.
Besides the three-, six-, and eight-day camps, the center offers a special three-day Avi-
ation Challenge for fighter pilot wannabes. If you pick the latter, you'll train on a simulated
fighter plane that can fly at 2,193 miles an hour, go on bombing missions, and participate in
a Top Gun-style dogfight.
The three-day Adult Space Academy camps are offered over one or more weekends of
August, September, and October and run $399, including accommodations, food, and visits
to the Space Museum. The three-day Aviation Challenge is offered once at the end of August
for the same price of $399. The six-day Adult Space Academy camps are available at the end
of August and beginning of September for $899, and the eight-day camp is the last weekend
of September, priced at $1,299. And unlike John Glenn, you won't have to submit to three
weeks of medical testing upon your return from space.
