dren running and laughing through the halls. King himself supposedly heard a child
calling out for his nanny. It's also reported that the ghosts of F. O. and Flora Stan-

For more than 35 years, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has led its members
(individual memberships start at $20) to domestic and international destinations to explore
cultures of the world (its international tours go to destinations from Antarctica to Timbuktu),
experience their artistic and architectural treasures, and gain a greater appreciation for his-
toric preservation. In fact, getting folks out to see the historic sites and properties (including
more than 200 hotels that have made the trust's list of Historic Hotels of America) is part
of the trust's mission. Established in 1949 by congressional legislation, the National Trust is
the premier nonprofit preservation organization in the United States. Historic, or what they
call “heritage,” tourism is an important part of the approach. As the trust likes to say, “Every
time you enjoy a historic place, you are not only helping to preserve it—you are helping to
improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.”
Of the domestic National Trust tours, nearly half are aboard ships. That means you'll en-
joy the comforts (and the food) of a cruise line while learning about, say, the military history
of Vicksburg or the journey of Lewis and Clark. Some of the trips are even aboard historic-
ally recognized ships such as the 1927 Delta Queen steamboat that's used for the “Cruising
the Mighty Mississippi Tour.”
The cost of the Hudson River Valley tour ranges from $2,875 to $3,695.
