In-Depth Information
The summer program, which runs from May through October and offers weeklong
classes with 25 to 35 students all living and learning together, is The Clearing's oldest school
and the one that most closely resembles Jensen's original folk school vision. The summer
program offers Sunday-through-Saturday workshops on natural sciences, literature, philo-
sophy, and arts and crafts. The Clearing also offers a winter program with more than a hun-
dred classes in January and February, but those are taught by volunteers and often offered
off-site.
Why would you want to go anywhere else? Situated on the Niagara Escarpment on a
limestone cliff near the tip of Wisconsin's Door Peninsula, overlooking Lake Michigan's
Green Bay, The Clearing has amazing views, spectacular sunsets, and 128 acres of forests,
meadows, hiking trails, and historic stone-and-log buildings, all of which have been added to
the National Register of Historic Places.
A weeklong stay at The Clearing, including all meals and a bed in a cabin or dorm (all
outfitted with handmade quilts), ranges from $750 to $1,085.
