they staged rousing races for office. Mary L. Landrieu, now a U.S. senator from Louisiana,
for example, turned her weeklong education on democracy into a full-fledged political career.
Close Up has programs for students, teachers, and seniors that are arranged through
Elderhostel. These trips include all scheduled program activities and entrance fees, most
meals, hotel accommodations, all gratuities, program instruction, and in-town transportation
to all scheduled Close Up activities. Teachers and students have to set up programs through
Close Up, and these programs range in price between $1,000 and $1,400 for seven days
and six nights. The senior programs, which can be scheduled only through Elderhostel, are
offered year-round and cost $800 to $1,500 for five or six days. You can also take an adult
program by chaperoning a student group.
