and recreational activities. Most run from one to three weeks, with themes ranging from bird-
ing and natural history to health and wellness. On a weeklong marine science course, for
example, you'll take guided tide-pool walks and snorkeling expeditions, attend lectures on
marine ecology, and help with coastal cleanup projects.
SOME ENCHANTED ISLAND TRIVIA
Every day, on average, the Big Island of Hawaii gains an extra 3 or 4 square
feet of real estate thanks to regular eruptions by the Kilauea volcano.
With miles of black lava fields, the Big Island—at least on the west
side—could easily play body double for the moon. In fact, Gemini and
Apollo astronauts used to train there. Locals leave creative graffiti by stra-
tegically placing chunks of white coral.
Before modern science came along, ancient Romans believed volcanoes
were the chimney of the forge where the thunderbolts for the god Jupiter
were made. Jupiter's blacksmith was named Vulcan, hence “volcano.” In
Hawaii, people attributed eruptive activity to Pele, the goddess of violence.
Astronomy enthusiasts can sign up for an EDventure that includes stargazing at the On-
izuka Visitor Center (elevation 9,000 feet) or at the observatories on the summit of Mauna
Kea (13,000 feet). The facilities on top of the volcano support the largest collection of tele-
scopes anywhere.
One of the most popular EDventures is an 8-day trip that includes one day each studying
the following disciplines: birds and plants, volcanology, astronomy, agriculture, marine bio-
logy, art, geology, and business. Each area of study is integrated with all the other topics and
reflects the teachings and traditions of Hawaii's Kupuna.
The cost for an EDventure varies depending on the experience, the length of the pro-
gram, and the focus of the trip. All programs are adapted to fit within budgetary requirements
and include meals, accommodations, ground transportation, field instruction, and educational
materials.
