In-Depth Information
Chautauqua has its own opera company, orchestra, theater company, movie house, and
ballet. Nightly performances are held in the 5,000-seat, open-air, covered amphitheater, the
oldest and largest of its kind still in use in the country.
The institution offers one-week, multiweek, and entire season packages. Some families
have been gathering here for seven generations. There's a wide range of accommodations,
from the stately Athenaeum Hotel to quaint B&Bs in lovely old Victorian homes. There are
also many grand private homes that owners gladly rent out. Weekly classes vary in price, but
most run in the $60 to $90 range. There's a onetime gate admission ($15 for a day ticket,
$47.50 for a day/evening ticket) that allows entry into various lectures, readings, and rehears-
als. A one-week ticket is $305 and includes admission to everything (lectures, symphony,
popular entertainments, and so forth except theater, opera, and special studies courses). Ac-
commodations range from $49 a night for a room to $5,000 per week for a house.
