In-Depth Information
Brewer, a half Cherokee-half Choctaw who was asked by owner Bob Cote to
develop the nature center a half dozen years ago, doesn't miss a thing on his near-
daily walks. And he makes sure guests don't either, introducing them to everything
from rattlesnakes on a stick (a walking stick he holds at a safe distance) to scorpions
and cochineel beetles that were once used to dye the red coats of early British sol-
diers.
“I'm a seven-year-old boy in a 54-year-old body,” Brewer says. His enthusiasm
is contagious. Engaging all the senses, guests on Brewer's walks eat wild hack-
berries, smell canyon ragweed that reeks of turpentine, and hear the call of dozens
of birds. According to Brewer, “Most people miss 98 percent of their lives.” But
not here. Tanque Verde Nature Center, 14301 East Speedway, Tucson, AZ 85748,
