In-Depth Information
The Browns started the company in 1991. Inspired by the massive popularity of Ken
Burns's PBS special on the Civil War, Pete decided to see if he could round up some other
history buffs who might enjoy traveling to the spots they loved reading about. The first
year, they offered two tours. By 2000, their roster of history tours listed 29. Although His-
toryAmerica's offerings are currently slimmer (seven tours and three cruises in 2007), it's
only because the new owners, taking over the reins in late 2006, wanted some time to get
adjusted.
Over the years, HistoryAmerica has offered tours on a broad spectrum of subjects, from
“Great Love Stories of the Civil War” to tours looking into the Cherokee Nation's Trail of
Tears and Benedict Arnold's role in the American Revolution. For several years, they worked
with the History Channel to offer such trips as “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” (spring train-
ing in Florida) and “Historic Hawaii.” The Apache Wars, Crazy Horse and Custer, World War
II in the South Pacific, and the War of 1812 on Lake Erie are all subjects that HistoryAmerica
has tackled with enlightenment and fun.
The six- to eight-day tours, which include accommodations, transportation, all admis-
sions, breakfast, and about half the lunches and dinners run from $2,095 to $2,695. The
“Antietam and Gettysburg: Killing Grounds That Changed America” tour detailed on p. 169
goes for $2,165 per person, based on double occupancy ($2,595 single). Besides the historian
guide, you'll get a professional tour director and a reading list.
