University of North Carolina. Since 1979, the University of North Carolina's (UNC) Pro-
gram in the Humanities and Human Values has been offering seminars, workshops, and con-
ferences “to enrich the life of the mind and contribute to the development of a more humane
world.” For a while, it was called “Vacation College” and offered five weeklong sessions
of classes. It has morphed into about 30 weekends throughout the year (with the occasional
Wednesday) called “Adventures in Ideas.” Recent offerings include “Empires across Time,”
“God, Religion, and Evil,” and “Moral Philosophy: An Introduction to Kant and Mill.” Al-
though you don't bunk on campus, the UNC Humanities Program website has a listing of
comfortable hotels around town. Tuition ranges from $105 to $185. Special rates are avail-
able for first-timers and teachers.
