Calling itself “the performance sailing school,” J World has traditionally been
renowned for its racing instruction, but it also offers corporate teambuilding events and sail-
ing vacations to such exotic locales at Tortola, British Virgin Islands. With courses in Key
West, Annapolis, Newport, San Diego, and San Francisco, J World offers everything from
five-day “Learn to Sail” classes at $995 to seven-day live-aboard adventures for $2,690.

Offshore Sailing School.
You can sign up for classes with Offshore in ten resort locations.
Owned by former Olympic racer Steve Colgate and his wife Doris (who founded the National
Women's Sailing Association), the school was started in 1964 and is considered the toniest
of the sailing schools. Basic training is aboard the sleek but unsinkable Colgate 26, designed
by Steve himself. A typical three-day learn-to-sail week on Florida's west coast at Captiva
Island costs $1,500 based on double occupancy. For that, you get 20 hours of instruction and
three nights at the luxurious South Seas Island Resort. Offshore also offers weeklong racing
and cruising courses where you race all day, every day, against other sailors.

Womanship.
Not a typical sailing school, Womanship offers women-only courses and aims
to “empower” women as well as merely giving lessons in how to handle a boat. “Tacking
and jibing are means to a greater end,” says Suzanne Pogell, who started the school in 1984.
“We've had women write and tell us that this was the most incredible experience they've had
other than the birth of their children.” With eight current locations from Vancouver to the
Florida Keys, Womanship offers live-aboard programs ranging from 3 days in New England
for $1,175 to 12 days in Turkey at $4,250.
