Remember when people vacationed to get out of the kitchen? Not anymore. Thanks in
part to Food Network, which since 1993 has been entertaining viewers with its celebrity chefs,
cooking vacations are one of the hottest new travel trends. Shaw Guides, publisher of
The
Guide to Cooking Schools,
says the number of travel-and-cook listings has more than doubled
since Emeril Lagasse began urging us to “kick it up a notch.”
And it's not just serious foodies imbibing in the new trend. Participants in cooking culin-
ary vacations include everyone from professional chefs to newbies trying to figure out which
end of the knife to use, not to mention a lot of folks who simply enjoy the soul-satisfying ex-
perience of creating a meal together.
