In-Depth Information
Although each of these learning centers hires paid employees, the bulk of the work is
done by volunteers. With more than 28,000 annual visitors to Perryville alone, you can ima-
gine there's a lot to be accomplished—from tending the organic gardens to caring for the
livestock to facilitating the many educational programs. Residential volunteers get housing
and noon meals plus stipends, with a one month commitment, in exchange for helping run
Heifer's programs, which range from two-hour tours to weeklong experiences.
A shorter volunteer option is to take an Adult Service Journey, in which you'll visit for a
week and help with such activities as building a greenhouse or sprucing up the ranch for the
Global Village Day celebration. Each of the adult service journeys revolves around a partic-
ular theme. On a recent “From Bees to Honey” journey, for example, volunteers helped with
everything from extracting honey from honey boxes to bottling and labeling the honey for
sale. Tuition for the adult service journeys is $406, including all meals and lodging as well as
a hayride tour of the ranch and other programs.
