imo. Although many forts from that era have been shut down, Fort Huachuca survived budget
cuts and even thrived. In 1954, it became Ground Zero for testing electronics and communic-
ations equipment and today serves as an intelligence school. Base environmentalists, thanks
to Stone, Shaw and Morse, got involved in mountain lion tracking as far back as 1989.
Sky Island Alliance has been hosting the annual track for the past five years. And for
overachievers, Sky Island Alliance offers a year-round volunteer tracking program that tracks
not only mountain lions but also bobcats, jaguars, bears, gray wolves, and other carnivores.
To participate in Sky Island's year-round tracking program, the organization offers an intens-
ive five-day training, after which time you and your team of three or four volunteer trackers
will adopt a transect, a 1- to 1.5-mile walking route located in such wildlife movement cor-
ridors as washes and ridge tops. You're responsible for monitoring the transect once every
six weeks, with all data reported regularly to the program coordinator.
Besides monitoring mountain lions, Sky Island Alliance offers a full schedule of volun-
teer “field trips,” from mapping roads to collecting plant data.
There is no charge to participate in the annual mountain lion track count. Training for
the year-round program costs $75.
