Infrastructure levels
systems. Infrastructure components in this case would be, for example, thesauri,
translators and cross-references.
Finally we come to the preservation aspects. Here we imagine there is another
stack of levels - much like the current stack but almost certainly implemented in
different ways.
By analogy with the other infrastructures we regard the present and future
as two “islands of capabilities” which are joined by a number of infrastructure
components - which are essentially those described in the previous chapter, with
implementations of many described in Chaps. 16 and 17 .
24.9 Summary
This short, but important, chapter tries to place the infrastructure needed to sup-
port digital preservation in the context of the broader e-science infrastructure (also
known as Cyber-infrastructure).
Remember from Sect. 3.4 there are disincentives against digital preservation.
Therefore it is beneficial to look not just at controlling costs, which is the focus of
Part III, but also to look at increasing the benefits.
In particular it was pointed out in Sect. 3.4.2 that providing benefits for future
generations is laudable but insufficient.
