In-Depth Information
Zinonas Buses ( www.zinonasbuses.com ) Famagusta district
A useful website that does a good job of endeavouring to pull together all the routes of the five companies is
www.cyprusbybus.com . In addition, buses that connect the cities are run by the InterCity Bus Company
( www.intercity-buses.com ) , which offers discounted fares on multiple journeys.
Buses in the North are a varied mix of old and newer privately owned buses too numerous to list here. See the re-
gional chapters for more details.
THE BUS SYSTEM
In mid-2010 there was been a major shake-up of the former, reputedly unreliable, bus system in the Republic of
Cyprus. Simply put, each of the five districts now operates its own bus company. Fares are government subsid-
ised and have been pegged at €1.50 per ride, €5 per day, €15 per week and €40 for a month of unlimited journeys
within the respective districts, which includes rural villages.
In addition, buses that connect the cities are run by the appropriately named InterCity Buses ( www.intercity-
buses.com ) , which is also government subsidised and, therefore, very reasonable, given the distances involved.
Each route also offers discounted fares on multiple journeys over a day/week/month or year. You can buy your
tickets on the bus.
Costs
Fares cost €1.50 per ride, €5 per day, €15 per week and €40 for a month of unlimited journeys within a district, and
which includes rural villages. InterCity Buses are also government subsidised and are surprisingly reasonable, given the
distances involved.
Bus prices in the North generally cost between 4TL to 8TL.
See individual city and town entries for bus frequency and departure times.
Reservations
Bus reservations are not normally required in either the South or the North.
TRAVEL IN THE LOW SEASON
All of the bus transport times in this guide are for the peak season (June to October). You'll find that public trans-
port frequency decreases, together with tourist demand, during off-peak times. This is particularly problematic
with mountain destinations, where the buses sometimes don't run at all. So before departure in the quieter months
be sure to check all transport times via the respective bus company's website.
