GETTING THERE & AWAY
Most visitors to Cyprus arrive by air. Many of them come on charter flights or inexpensive flights operated by budget air-
lines, particularly from the UK.
Crossing the Border
Travelling between the Republic and Northern Cyprus is easy nowadays, since the restrictions on crossing the border have
been eased; however, you are only allowed to cross at designated checkpoints.
Entering the Country
Citizens of EU member states and Switzerland can travel to the Republic with just their national identity card. Nationals
of the UK have to carry a full passport (UK visitor passports are not acceptable), and all other nationalities must have a
full valid passport. In Northern Cyprus, EU citizens can stay for up to three months.
You will need a valid passport to cross between the North and South. You'll need to produce your passport or ID card
every time you check into a hotel in Cyprus, and when you conduct banking transactions.
CLIMATE CHANGE AND TRAVEL
Every form of transport that relies on carbon-based fuel generates CO 2 , the main cause of human-induced climate
change. Modern travel is dependent on aeroplanes, which might use less fuel per per person than most cars but
travel much greater distances. The altitude at which aircraft emit gases (including CO 2 ) and particles also contrib-
utes to their climate change impact. Many websites offer 'carbon calculators' that allow people to estimate the car-
bon emissions generated by their journey and, for those who wish to do so, to offset the impact of the greenhouse
gases emitted with contributions to portfolios of climate-friendly initiatives throughout the world. Lonely Planet
offsets the carbon footprint of all staff and author travel.
Air
There are scheduled flights and an ever-increasing number of charter and budget flights to Cyprus from most European
cities and the Middle East. Flights are heavily booked in the high season (mid-summer). Tickets on scheduled flights tend
to be expensive, but Europe-based travellers may be able to pick up cheaper tickets with budget companies. If you're in
Greece, you can usually find reasonably priced one-way or return tickets to the Republic from travel agents in Athens,
Thessaloniki or Iraklio.
