during the funeral service. He is succeeded by Spyros Kyprianou.
1983
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is proclaimed by its leader. Its sovereignty is only recognised by Turkey.
Thousands of mainland Turks settle in the North of the island.
1999
The Republic of Cyprus starts to prosper economically and the standard of living booms. Northern Cyprus is sup-
ported largely by Turkey, in the wake of international economic sanctions.
2002
Cyprus and Turkey both seek entry to the EU. The leaders of the Republic and the North attend intense talks,
aimed at reunification. Talks stall and no agreement is reached.
2003
The North's leader, Rauf Denktaş, announces a surprise decision to allow Cypriots from both sides to visit the op-
posing parts of the island. The first crossings in 29 years are peaceful.
2004
Republic of Cyprus joins the EU.
2012
Pavlos Kontides wins a silver medal in the Laser sailing event at the London Olympics; Cyprus' first ever
Olympic medal.
2013
Veteran right-winger, Nicos Anastasiades is elected president in the Republic of Cyprus
