Founded in neolithic times and gloriously perched on a hillside overlooking the sea,

flourished under the Mycenaeans, Ptolemies, Romans and, later, the Christi-
ans. This is the most spectacular of the South's archaeological sites, including some well-
preserved and fascinating mosaics, an early Christian basilica and a breathtaking amphi-
theatre that still hosts opera under the stars. After exploring the site, consider a dip in the
sea at nearby Kourion Beach, where you can also find ruins of a port basilica dating from
around the 6th century.
