FAMAGUSTA (MAĞUSA) & THE KARPAS
(KIRPAŞA) PENINSULA
Famagusta (Mağusa)
Famagusta's hotels are generally an either-or equation: either ultra-swanky or basic, with
very little in between. Due to the lack of accommodation options in the city most travellers
choose to visit on a day trip rather than stay overnight.
Altun Tabya HOTEL
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; % 366 2585; altuntabyahotel@hotmail.com ; Kızılkule Sokak, Old Town; s/d/tr €25/30/35, d with
air-con €35)
Look, it's as basic as they come (only one room has air-con) but it's clean, every room has
a dinky balcony, there's a decent supply of hot water and owner Halil is a fun and friendly
guy that really endeavours to please. If you want to be right in the Old Town, this is a great
choice.
Portofino HOTEL
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; % 366 4393; www.portofinohotel-cyprus.com ; Feyzi Çakmak Bulvarı 9; s/d/tr €25/35/50; pas )
Just outside of the Old Town walls, near the port, Portofino has large, dated rooms that
could do with a serious refurbishment but are a fine place to rest your head for the night. It
does have a decent pool.
Crystal Rocks BUNGALOWS
( % 378 9400; www.cypruscrystalrocks.com ; Salamis Yolu; r €57-70; paWs )
Over 60 bungalows, 10km north of Famagusta, next to the beach and not far from Salamis.
Very popular with European travellers, the modern, bright split-level cabins have a bit of a
1980s vibe going on and are all spotlessly clean. The swimming pool and aqua-slides are a
hit with children.
Salamis Bay Conti HOTEL
( % 378 8201; www.salamisbayconti.com ; Salamis Yolu; r €60-90; aWs )
Located 8km north of Famagusta, this good-value giant has a large attractive pool area and
its own expansive sandy beach. Rooms are suitably big and elegant to match the spa,
casino and numerous bars and restaurants all offered. Rooms without sea view are more
cost effective.
