In-Depth Information
İskele (Trikomo)
The crossroads village of İskele, birthplace of Ethniki Organosi tou Kypriakou Agona
(EOKA; National Organisation for the Cypriot Struggle) leader Georgios Grivas, is note-
worthy for its 12th-century church Panagia Theotokos (Church of the Blessed Virgin
Mary) which is now an icon museum (İskele İkon Müzesi; adult/student 5/3YTL; h 9am-5pm Jun-Sep, to
3.30pm Oct-May) .
The domed building, with arched recesses in its side walls, has fine paintings of the Vir-
gin Mary of the Annunciation and the Prayer of Joachim and Anna, in which the couple
are seen embracing while a young girl peers from behind a window. The marble inlay
from the church's original iconostasis is in the belfry.
Panagia Theotokos is easy to spot on the western edge of the village.
Boğaz (Bogazi)
This small fishing village, about 24km north of Famagusta, is the last beach stop before
the road takes you inland to the Karpas (Kırpaşa) Peninsula proper. The small harbour still
has a quaint, yesteryear ambience, filled with local fishing boats while just to the south is
a stretch of developed beach with straw umbrellas and sun loungers.
Many Russian, German and British visitors rent villas here during the summer and the
coastline is packed with modern identikit holiday-home developments. To cater for this
seasonal influx the seafront is filled with pricy fish taverns. Located on the sea walk, with
great views, reasonably priced Kiyi (Boǧaz; mains 25-30YTL; h 11am-11pm) serves fresh fish
(caught daily) with large portions of chips.
