St George of the Latins Church HISTORIC SITE
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Cafer Paşa Sokak)
Sitting incongrously amid a traffic intersection, St George of the Latins is one of
Famagusta's oldest churches. The remaining walls with their distinctive lancet windows
are a good example of early Gothic architecture.

WALKING FAMAGUSTA'S WALLS
Start your Famagusta wall tour at the southern end near the Land Gate ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) on the Ravelin
(Rivettina) Bastion ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; h 9am-6pm Mon-Fri), also known as the 'Akkule' or 'white
tower'. It was here that the Ottomans first breached the fortifications, surrendered by the white-flag-waving Vene-
tians. You can enter the warren of rooms within.
From the Ravelin Bastion the walls head north, passing four minor bastions, Diocare ( MAP GOOGLE
MAP ) , Moratto ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ), Pulacazara ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) , San Luca ( MAP
GOOGLE MAP ) and the steeply pitched Martinengo Bastion ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) .
This in turn leads seaward, passing the Del Mezzo ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) , Diamante ( MAP GOOGLE
MAP ) and Signoria Bastions ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ). Further on is the impressive citadel known as
Othello's Tower.
The Sea Gate ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) on the eastern side originally opened directly onto the sea. Today the
wharfs of the modern port have extended the land bridge considerably.
At the southeastern extremity is the Canbulat Bastion ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ), in which Ottoman hero
General Canbulat Bey died valiantly while attacking the walls on horseback during the bloody siege. From here
the walls loop back to the Land Gate via the Camposanto ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ), Andruzzi ( MAP
GOOGLE MAP ) and Santa Napa Bastions ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) .

Glapsides BEACH
F
This sandy public beach is 4km north of Famagusta. Shallow and sheltered by its position
in the bay, it's popular with locals and great for kids.
There's a beach bar and restaurant, and you can hire sun loungers and umbrellas. Jet
skis, pedal-bikes and canoes are available for hire, and the conditions are great for snor-
kelling. The beach is also an avid birdwatching location during migratory seasons.
