Troödos Byzantine Churches
The proliferation of well-maintained 8th- to 12th-century churches nestled into the moun-
tainside amaze with their vivid, timeless frescos by skilled painters. Oppression during
Lusignan rule led Orthodox Cypriots, clergy and artisans to withdraw to the Troödos
ranges, and these churches and chapels ( Click here ) are the result of their dedication. Ten of
them appear on the Unesco World Heritage Site List, truly crowning Cyprus as the 'island
of the saints'.
