In-Depth Information
One for wildflower and orchid spotters, this flora-filled easy walk begins in the village of
Karaman. Head west on the road for 400m and then take the main dirt track from here,
still heading west. There are great views across the hills to St Hilarion Castle along the
way, though most people walk here for the flora.
Buffavento Castle Walk HIKING
Starting from the Buffavento Cafe on the Beşparmak Pass road, you can hike up the
mountain road to where the remnants of Buffavento Castle cling to the cliff top. Two and
a half kilometres uphill, a walking track - marked by red trail blazes - verges off to the
right winding its way to the castle car park at the top.
This is a great day walk for those who don't have their own transport as the
Kyrenia-Famagusta bus passes right beside the Buffavento Cafe.
Beşparmak Range Trek HIKING
The ultimate trek for mountain view fans is the hike along the spine of the Beşparmak
(Pentadaktylos) Range which takes in forest trails and several villages along the way.
Again, this is best walked in sections, staying in one of these villages. The section starting
from Buffavento Castle and ending at Bellapais is one of the most beautiful.
?Alevkaya to Kantara Trek HIKING
Alevkaya to Kantara is a long easterly trail, with over 40km of hiking, connecting the
Alevkaya Herbarium Forest Station to Kantara Castle.
Ağirdağ to Geçitköy Trek HIKING
The hike from Ağirdağ to Geçitköy is a good trek for experienced walkers. Best tackled in
sections over a few days, it runs west along the southern flank of the Kyrenia Range. It
starts at Ağirdağ village on the Kyrenia-North Nicosia road and finishes at Geçitköy on
the Kyrenia-Güzelyurt (Morfou) road.
8 Getting Around
Public transport in the Kyrenia region consists of buses, dolmuşes (minibuses) and service
taxis (known as kombos) that run during the day between the major towns and larger vil-
lages. Fares are cheap (around 4TL to 6TL), but services can be late and infrequent.
Cycling is a good-weather alternative, as the region's east-west routes are mostly flat
and well serviced with places to stay, eateries and beaches.
