In-Depth Information
Gallery of Tomb-Finds MUSEUM
( MAP GOOGLE MAP )
This small but interesting exhibit from the neolithic and Bronze ages as well as the Hel-
lenistic and Byzantine periods includes amphorae, gold jewellery and ancient coins.
Another display shows a reconstruction of the Neolithic II Period houses (4500-3900 BC)
made from mud and stone, found at the archaeological site of Ayios Epiktitos Vrysi, just
outside Çatalköy.
Old Town NEIGHBOURHOOD
Wrapping around the Old Harbour, between Canbulat Caddesi and Kale Sokak, the dimin-
utive Old Town is Kyrenia's most atmospheric area for a wander. Its winding alleyways
hold a jumble of abandoned old stone buildings slowly slipping into disrepair, mixed with
newer concrete houses.
Walk down Ağa Cafer Pașa Sokak to see Agha Cafer Pașa Mosque (built in 1589) and
the dilapidated remains of the 16th-century Chysopolitissa Church . There is also an an-
cient Greco-Roman tomb on Canbulat Caddesi.
Cyprus House MUSEUM
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Old Harbour; adult/student 5/2TL; h 9am-6pm Mon-Sat)
This lovingly restored old carob warehouse on the harbour contains interesting ethno-
graphic exhibits of traditional clothing, furniture and Cypriot textile craft work. There are
also displays on the harbour's history as a major trading port exporting carob to Europe.
Archangelos Michael Icon Museum MUSEUM
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Canbulat Caddesi; admission 5TL; h 8am-3.30pm Mon-Wed, Fri & Sat, to 5pm Thu)
The 19th-century St Archangelos Michael Church, easily distinguished by its prominent
bell tower, displays icons dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The collection is made
up of icons salvaged from Orthodox churches throughout North Cyprus. Notable depic-
tions include Saint George and the Dragon, the beheading of John the Baptist, and Virgin
and child.
2 Activities
Scuba diving and boat trips are the most popular activities in town.
The Old Harbour boat-cruise scene is like a market where everyone is selling the same
thing. For 50TL to 60TL you can expect to get a day cruise on a gulet (Turkish wooden
ship) with two swimming/snorkelling stops, usually finishing with an on-board barbecue
