In-Depth Information
Old City
o
Old Mosaic
TURKISH
Head for the delightful interior patio with its tumbling bourgainvillea, terracotta pots,
leafy plants and overall kitchen garden feel. Best choices are the meze dishes, like hum-
mus,
patican salata
(eggplant in garlic),
pastirma
(spicy sausage) and
barbunya
(barlotti
beans in olive oil). The same owners own the welcoming Old Mosaic Bar across the way.
Bereket
FAST FOOD
A rough-and-ready kiosk a few metres away from the grand Büyük Han, Bereket is run by
Ilker, who makes the best
pide
and
lahmacun
(Turkish-style pizza, topped with minced
lamb and parsley) in town in his stone oven. There are a couple of chairs outside or you
can munch on the go.
o
Boghjalian
TURKISH
Housed in the former mansion of a wealthy Armenian, Boghjalian is a quality, popular
restaurant. The set menu consists of either meze or mixed kebab, and food is served in a
leafy courtyard or a choice of two elegant dining rooms. Try the sublime
ceviz macanu
(green walnuts and almonds with lemon, sugar and cloves). Reservations recommended.
Sabor
MEDITERRANEAN
Right across from the Selimiye Mosque, this is North Nicosia's best choice for those who
just can't quite handle another kebab. The menu specialises in Italian and Spanish food,
with some Asian noodle dishes. The portions are generous, the prices are fair and the staff
(and resident cat population) are friendly.
Bay Kahkaha
TURKISH
Turkish Cypriot owner Mehmet returned from several years in Australia to open up this
restaurant and bar. The evocative setting is a 1928 building with original tiles, several in-
timate rooms and a garden dining space with palms and olive trees. The cuisine is tradi-
tional, with
kahkah tavuk dolma
(traditional stuffed chicken with mushrooms) a speciality.
The Queen's Pub, which shares the venue, is a vibrant night-time venue with live music
in summer.
