In the far corner, there's a a sumptuous selamlık (a retiring room for the owner of the
mansion and his guests), replete with sofas and nargileh (Middle Eastern water pipes),
and even some guests, in the form of eerie mannequins dressed up in suits.
Haydarpasha Mosque MOSQUE

This mosque was originally built as the 14th-century Church of St Catherine but now
functions as an art gallery. It's the second most important Gothic structure in North Nico-
sia after the Selimiye Mosque. The ornate sculptures, both inside and out, sprout gar-
goyles, dragons, shields and human heads.
Lapidary Museum MUSEUM
(Taş Eserler Müzesi; MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Kirlizade Sk; h 9am-3.30pm Mon-Wed & Fri, to 5pm Thu) F
Housed in a lovely 15th-century building, exhibits here include a varied collection of sar-
cophagi, shields, steles and columns, and a Gothic window rescued from a Lusignan
palace that once stood near Atatürk Meydanı.
Ethnographic Museum of Cyprus MUSEUM
( GOOGLE MAP ; % 227 1785; Ecvet Yusuf Cad 56; admission 10TL; h 9am-4pm Mon-Sat)
Arts and crafts dating back over 150 years comprise the eclectic private collection of the
amiable, English-speaking owner, Kibris Özei. Spread over three vast galleried floors, the
exhibits include delicate Ottoman glass rosewater sprinklers, 19th-century carved Cypriot
sideboards, traditional wedding dresses and a vast display of exquisite embroidery. A cof-
fee shop serving light snacks is set to open.
Located a block north of Deniz Plaza, a taxi from Kyrenia gate should cost you around
a 10TL.
Museum of Barbarism MUSEUM

The gruesome posters and photographs that once greeted arrivals at the Ledra Palace
Hotel crossing have been removed, but this museum has some similarly harrowing exhib-
its, including photo-documentary displays, particularly of Turkish Cypriots murdered in
the villages of Agios Sozomenos and Agios Vasilios.
The Museum of Barbarism is in a quiet suburb around 3km to the west of the Old City
and takes a bit of seeking out. Best option is to hop in a taxi (around 12TL from the
centre).
