Municipal Market MARKET

This Municipal Market in the New City re-opened in early 2014 after an extensive refur-
bishment. It sports a small, but select, array of stalls, selling fruit, veg, spices, bakery
goods, cheeses and similar. There is also a good cafe here and an excellent restaurant-
cum-deli called Limoncelli.
PLATEIA ELEFTHERIAS
A massive reconstruction project has been obstructing much of Nicosia's Plateia Eleftherias. The architect is Zaha
Hadid, one of the world's best. Renowned for her socially aware projects, Hadid's impressive CV includes the
Strasbourg tram station, a housing project for IBA-Block 2 in Berlin, and the Mind Zone in London's Millennium
Dome. Together with her Cypriot associate, Christos Passos, Hadid plans to construct a green belt along the moat
that currently surrounds the Venetian walls, turning the area within into Nicosia's central park, encircled by a
palm-tree-lined pedestrian walkway. There will be a (concrete) square in the midst of the green belt, where pedes-
trians can stroll and congregate, giving the area a new town centre. Hadid calls the design an 'urban intervention'.
There has been some controversy - but what's a grand architectural work without controversy? - with local
opponents complaining of too little public consultation on the project, concerns about the impact a large concrete
structure will have on the ancient walls, and the reduction of access to the Old City. Work started in 2008 but
there have been numerous delays (and economic woes) and word is that the project won't now be completed until
2015 (or thereabouts).
