In-Depth Information
There are just a couple of tables inside and out at this stripped back place so grab one
quick and order a specialty pourekia (small fried pasties) with a choice of fillings like
spinach, mushrooms and haloumi (helemi). Or go for a groat (a fried pie traditionally
filled with mincemeat). And don't forget that slice of sticky baklava for dessert.
o Shiantris CYPRIOT
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Pericleous 38; mains from €8; h 8.30am-9pm Mon-Sat; c )
Our top choice restaurant has moved from cramped premises to a super-spacious three-
floor venue with a rooftop terrace. Shiantris is named after its ebullient owner, who cooks
up a fantastic array of seasonal beans with lemon, parsley and olive oil. Other dishes in-
clude traditional Cypriot pasta and meat combos like beef cooked in tomato and pasta.
The new venue is light, airy and contemporary for enjoying cuisine which has remained
firmly (and deliciously) in classical mode.
Zanettos Taverna CYPRIOT
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Trikoupi 65; mains from €9, meze dishes €2; h 6.30pm-midnight; c )
This place has a great reputation in the city, as it's allegedly one of the city's oldest tradi-
tional taverns, dating back to 1932. Locals flock here in their dozens for the succulent
Greek-Cypriot meze, and it's definitely worth joining them - once you find the place, that
is. It's hidden away in the back streets.
There's no menu, but ask to read about the history of the place - it's fascinating. Note
also that the meze dishes are very generously sized. Come here hungry.
Kathodon GREEK
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; % 2266 1656; www.kathodon.eu ; Ledra St 62; mains from €8; h 9am-11.45pm; Wc )
Large, noisy and touristy… All is forgiven when you taste the authentic Greek cuisine
here, like Cretan apaki (smoked pork) and crispy pumpkin. Take a look at the wall full of
photos of contented customers, including Bill Clinton, but sit on the sprawling outside ter-
race for the best views and ambience. Live Greek music nightly.
Da Paolo ITALIAN
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Leoforos Konstantinou Paleologou 52; pizza from €11, pasta from €9; h 6pm-late)
This small Italian restaurant has a terrace setting beside the Venetian walls. It has a proper
wood-fired pizza oven, traditional strings-of-garlic-style decor and a wide choice of pizza
and pasta dishes. Go for the cipriota pizza with feta, haloumi, olives, salami and tomatoes
for a real taste-bud treat.
