In-Depth Information
original Jamie Oliver-style celebrity chef, who lived and, more famously, cooked in the ancient city of Kition
around AD 300 .
Typical dishes you can expect today include ingredients like wild asparagus, artichokes, various leafy greens,
extra-virgin olive oil and fresh herbs. At Kiniras Garden restaurant, part of the Vakhis scheme, owner Georgios
uses at least 10 different herbs in the marinade for his slow-cooked lamb.
Aside from Kiniras, several other member restaurants of the Vakhis scheme are clustered together in the pic-
turesque villages of the wine-growing area in the Troödos foothills southwest of Nicosia, including Loufou-
Agrovino ( % 2547 0202; mains from €8; h noon-4pm Mon-Sat) and Kamares ( % 2547 0719; mains from €10;
h 11.30am-4pm & 7-10pm Tue-Sun) both located in the pretty village of Lofou, and Takis ( % 2594 3631; mains
from €1; h noon-4pm Tue-Sun) in nearby Vouni. In general, Vakhis restaurants sport pretty traditional decor, with
chequered tablecloths, wooden tables, wicker chairs and similar.
Old City
Dining in the Old City is centred on two main areas, with a sprinkling of cheap, low-frills
restaurants scattered in between. Laïki Yitonia is mainly popular with the lunchtime
crowd of day-trippers, while the Famagusta Gate strip has several reliably good bars and
restaurants that are frequented mainly at night by locals in the know.

A simple, atmospheric place next to the Faneromeni Church, with a clutch of outside
tables set with colourful chequered tablecloths. Attracting lunching nine-to-fivers, the
food is homestyle Cypriot, with gutsy kleftiko (oven-baked lamb), stifado (beef or rabbit
stew) and stuffed vegetables on the menu. It's one of the most popular places in town, and
an empty seat is as rare as a mediocre meal.
Christakis CYPRIOT
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Leoforos Kostaki Pantelidi 28; mains €6; h 8am-10pm Mon-Sat)
Locals rate this rough-and-ready restaurant across from the bus station as the best place in
town for souvlaki. Market-fresh salads, superb vegetable side dishes, traditional bean
courses and a jovial family atmosphere complete the picture. Get here early to grab a
table; there is only a handful.
