LEDRA ST & LEDRA PALACE HOTEL CROSSINGS
These two checkpoints are the only places on the island reserved exclusively for pedestrian and bicycle crossings
between the North and the South. Masses of tourists and locals now cross from one side to the other, and many
cross in the middle of the night, too, after a late night out. Don't forget to take your passport or you will not be al-
lowed through the border.
At the Ledra St crossing, you will pass a small office with army and police officials from the Republic of
Cyprus, who will only check you on your return from the North and may well search your bags. They are gener-
ally friendly, though you should be careful not to exceed the amount of cigarettes and alcohol that you are permit-
ted to bring from the North.
You'll then come to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' kiosks, where you will be asked to fill out a
white 'visa form' with your name and passport number. You can keep one visa form for numerous entries into the
North. After that, you're free to roam.
The process is the same at the Ledra Palace Hotel crossing.
1 Sights & Activities
The most interesting part of the city for visitors is the Old City, lying within the 16th-cen-
tury Venetian walls. Note that a massive (albeit delayed) redesign project has currently
cordoned off much of Nicosia's Plateia Eleftherias ( Click here ) by the southern wall.
When completed, the area will encompass a park and a pedestrian walkway flanked by
palm trees and the existing ancient Venetian walls, at the base of which are car parks and
municipal gardens.
The New City sprawls southwards, and its main artery is the modern Leoforos
Archiepiskopou Makariou III (Makarios Ave). In the past this street was full of cafes,
bars, restaurants and shops. However, the recent economic recession has resulted in the
closure of numerous businesses, while others have shifted to the more animated Ledra St
in the Old City.
In addition to the crossover point at Ledra St, there is another at Ledra Palace Hotel, at
the far west of the Old City; both are pedestrian only. Agios Dometios, northwest of the
New City, is the car-only crossing point.
