In-Depth Information
WESTERN TROÖDOS
The sparsely populated area flanking the western foothills of the Troödos Mountains is
home to few attractions other than several delightful villages, where traditions hold fast and
the local Cypriot dialect is just that bit more impenetrable. If you're looking for a route to
central Troödos from the west coast, you can now easily follow a mixture of good sealed
and unsealed roads into the mountains. The best route takes you to Kykkos Monastery via
the village of Pano Panagia.
You'll need a vehicle to see these places, as public transport is patchy or nonexistent. Al-
ternatively, you could join a tour from Polis or Pafos.
WORTH A TRIP
FYTI
Easily accessible from Pano Panagia or Pafos, the picturesque village of Fyti is known for its distinctive weaving,
with patterns passed down through generations. Park outside the church and have a mid-morning snack or lunch at
the welcoming Fyti Village Tavern (Maria's Place; Fyti; mains €8-10, meze €13; h 7am-4pm), the most popular
place in town with villagers, including the local priest. Courgettes with eggs, couscous with yoghurt and an excel-
lent €13 meze are among the culinary treats. The interior is all beams and stone arches, with examples of local
hand-woven cloth on the wall, although the shady terrace is where you really want to be.
Next, amble across the square to the Folk Art Museum (Fyti; h 8am-1pm & 2-5pm) where former school
teacher Charalambos will explain the exhibits, ranging from live silkworms munching on their bed of mulberry
leaves to centuries-old donkey saddles and farm implements. Meanwhile, his cheerful wife, Theano, is busy at the
loom, weaving exquisitely patterned silk-and-cotton fabrics. There are interesting historical photos here as well, in-
cluding some of camels, which were used as pack animals until the late '50s. You can buy the hand-woven pieces,
including cushion covers, runners and bags. At the very minimum, pick up a €2 embroidered bookmark memento.
If you don't make a purchase, a small donation is appreciated.
Pano Panagia
Pop 560
This village is the birthplace of Makarios III, the island's famous archbishop-president. A
few tavernas and cafes on the main street provide very average (and overpriced) snacks and
meals to the day trippers.
