In-Depth Information
duck into the Folk Art Museum and then leave on the F725 towards Pano Panagia via Kritou Marottous and As-
progia; the scenery is lovely, with vineyards, citrus groves and distant mountains.
Watch for the sign for the 3 Vouni Panayia Winery and stop for a wine tasting; the Barba Yiannis dry red
comes particularly recommended. Continue on to 4 Pano Panagia , the birthplace of Archbishop Makarios; have
a quick nose around his childhood home, a typical peasants' house with just two rooms.
Head south out of town on the F622, stopping at the well-signposted 5 Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery for
lunch on the terrace, accompanied by beautiful countryside views. A couple of kms on from here is another excel-
lent winery, 6 Kolios Vineyards , which offers free tastings. Their Shiraz is highly regarded. Follow signs to the
E702 and Choulou. After around 3km you will pass through a fascinating 7 abandoned village where just a
couple of residents, one donkey and several goats remain after a 1969 earthquake forced the vast majority of vil-
lagers to relocate.
In 8 Choulou have a look at the simple whitewashed mosque (this was a Turkish village before 1974) and
enjoy a coffee at the traditional Antoyaneta Taverna across the way. Make the last stop on your tour the village of
9 Lemona , home to an excellent micro-winery: Tsangarides Winery. Continue back to Pafos on the B7, via
Letymvou and Tsada.
Coral Bay
Coral Bay is located 12km northwest of Pafos, with several different stretches of beach,
all accessible from different parts of the approach road. Although rows of umbrellas and
crowds of bathers are no longer conducive to finding coral on this lovely beach, the atmo-
sphere is lively and the facilities are good for families. The restaurants are largely indiffer-
ent unless you like burgers and chips.
The construction of a luxurious new 1000-berth marina in nearby Potima has been in-
definitely postponed.
