LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
KAKOPETRIA'S HISTORIC QUARTER
To find the most picturesque and historic part of town, take the lane east of the Village Pub , past a large boulder
known as the Stone of the Couple which has a plaque describing how it was thought to bring good luck to newly-
weds until it toppled over and crushed one such - very unlucky - couple. The houses here have traditional trussed
roofs, covered with reeds and tiles and supported by beams with overhanging wooden balconies. Seek out the
simple Metamorposis Sotiros chapel, as well as a small wine museum, tucked up a side street but well signposted.
8 Getting There & Away
There's no direct public transport to the Unesco-listed churches in the valley.
Osel Buses run from Constanza Bastion, Nicosia, to Kakopetria about every hour from
5.45am to 8pm on weekdays and less frequently, from 8am, on weekends. There are
roughly the same number of buses doing the return trip. A single/return fare costs €1.50/3.
