In-Depth Information
It's a great base for day trips to surrounding sites like the monasteries at Kykkos and
Troöditissa, the Byzantine churches and the wine villages of the Kommandaria region.
You'll definitely need a car or suitable alternative to explore the greater area.
Check out www.platres.org to keep up with local information.
1 Sights
The village has some wonderful examples of traditional stone buildings, now mostly held
(and still used) by the municipality. As you walk around the streets, look out for examples
like the police station (built by the British) near the CTO office, the old gymnasium
(now the Platres Hospital) 600m south of the village centre, the two-storey community
council offices , and the well-kept building of the Electricity Authority , built in 1930 us-
ing local stone.
2 Activities
Only 10km from Central Troödos and its various nearby hiking trails, Platres has some
good hikes, such as the downhill route to Foini, 9km to the west, the slightly easier 7km
route to Perapedhi, and an excellent 3km uphill ramble to Pouziaris. These hikes and oth-
ers are mapped in the CTO brochure Platres, available at the Troödos Visitor Centre.
5 Eating
Enjoy local dishes accompanied by some superb wines from the nearby krasohoria valley
and Kommandaria region.
o Mimi's Restaurant CYPRIOT
( % 2542 1449; Olympou; mains from €8, meze €15; h 9am-10pm)
Located just past the police station on the main road through town, this may not be the
most atmospheric place to eat in town, but ask any local where they like to dine and this is
the place they will probably cite. You won't hear that dreaded ping of the microwave,
everything here is freshly made. The meze is the menu highlight.
Skylight Restaurant Bar & Pool MEDITERRANEAN
( www.skylight.com.cy ; Leoforos Archiepiskopou Makariou III 524; mains from €10; h noon-10pm)
This popular restaurant offers an excellent choice of grills and seafood dishes, as well as
an extensive choice of close to a dozen salads. Unusually, you can enjoy your meal in
between taking a dip in the restaurant pool (admission per day €5).
