large tank, or go for a fish meze (€21 per person). Vegetarians are thoughtfully catered for
with vegie burgers and various salad choices.
The beach is also home to the well-respected Curium Beach Equestrian Centre ( % 9956

treks and classes, including dressage.
The beach can be reached by public transport (Bus 16) from Lemesos.
Lady's Mile Beach
This 7km stretch of hard-packed sand and pebbles is a popular weekend beach. Named
after a horse owned by a colonial governor who exercised his mare here, it runs south bey-
ond Lemesos' New Port along the eastern side of the British-controlled Akrotiri Penin-
sula. Keep driving away from the blight of cranes at the port, as the beach and the view
improve the further south you go.
On summer weekends, the citizens of Lemesos flock here in large numbers to relax in
the fairly shallow waters. A couple of beach taverns serve the crowds and provide some
respite from an otherwise barren beachscape. Bring your own shade if you plan to sit on
the beach all day, as well as mosquito repellent if you are staying here until dusk - the
nearby salt lake provides a ripe breeding ground for these little nippers.
Governor's Beach
Lemesos' tourist appeal starts 30km east of the city, at Governor's Beach, with several
coves of dark sand contrasting with the white, chalky rocks. On the downside, the Vasi-
likos power station looms 3km to the east, blighting the otherwise seamless sea views.
A good restaurant choice here (signposted from the approach road) is Panayiotis ( % 2563
2315; www.panayiotisgovernorsbeach.com ; Governor's Beach; mains €9-20; h 11am-10pm) , which has had the
same ebullient owner, Andreas, since 1963. Order the speciality, fish meze, and sit sur-
rounded by lush, mature gardens, with eucalyptus, pines, oleanders and olive trees, over-
looking the sea below. Andreas also has a couple of reasonable apartments to rent.
Avdimou Beach
This lovely stretch of beach is home to Zias Beach Club (Avdimou Beach; mains €10-14;
h 10am-11pm Apr-Nov) with its dining area and classy wooden sun-loungers. You can rent a
sunbed and parasol and they will throw in a main course meal for €15 - or bring a picnic
and pay just €3.20. For something a little more traditional head to the adjacent long-stand-
