Using a 2B pencil, sketch the puppy on tracing paper, using either the basic shapes
method or the grid method. Once you are satisfied with the drawing, transfer only the
necessary lines to the bristol board.

Add Tone
With the 2B pencil, add the darkest tones on the head. Use a 4H pencil for the white
fur, and add the softest tone with a tortillion that already has a buildup of graphite.
Pick out some lights with the click eraser. Cut the end off the eraser with a craft knife
so you have a sharp edge to help you “draw” with the eraser and create fine lines.
PROTECT YOUR DRAWING
If you are right-handed, work from left to right so that your hand will not be resting
on a completed area of the drawing (and vice versa if you are left-handed). This, in
addition to having a sheet of tracing paper under your hand, will help you avoid
smudging the drawing.
