In-Depth Information
This duckling's beak shows again how an open mouth can convey a happy
appearance. When drawing a surface such as a beak, burnishing with a
white colored pencil can be useful for creating a smooth appearance.
ears
The position of an animal's ears can be a good indicator of its mood. For
example, a kitten with ears that are twitched back is signaling irritation.
With many animals, ears that are pricked forward are showing alertness.
When horses are relaxed, their ears swivel outwards, and when they are
feeling aggressive, they lay their ears right back. Rabbits will lay their ears
back when they are trying to be inconspicuous.
Puppies seem to have the greatest variation in ears between the different
breeds. There are cocker spaniels with long, flowing ears, German shep-
herds with upright ears, and Dobermans, whose ears have been docked to
an upright, pricked position.
