eyes
Getting the eyes right is essential to creating a successful animal drawing.
Animals have very expressive eyes, and this is one of their main methods of
communicating their feelings to us.
Baby animals typically have very large eyes. This is because the eyes
reach their full mature size when the animal is still quite young. Even in hu-
mans, the eyes reach full size by the age of three years. These large eyes
help give baby creatures their appealing, defenseless look. I often start my
animal drawings with the eyes, because I get more emotionally involved in
my drawing when it is “looking back at me.”
The shape of the eye and pupil varies among species. If you are having
trouble creating eye contact or placing highlights, work it out on your tra-
cing paper before trying it on your final drawing. Too much erasing can
create a smudged appearance.
