In-Depth Information
Just as fur follows the shape of an animal's body, feathers conform to the
shape of the bird. The majority of feathers are “contour feathers.” Un-
derneath the contour feathers on many birds are “down” feathers. These
vary according to species, and do not have the central rachis that a contour
feather has. Down on a baby bird is called “juvenile down.”
