using a grid
The grid method is a good way to create a drawing from a reference photo.
It's easy to get overwhelmed by trying to copy the whole thing at once, but
breaking it up into small pieces helps make the job less intimidating. Be-
cause you are concentrating on one small square at a time, it's easier to fo-
cus on the isolated shapes and lines that make up the picture as a whole.
1 Create your grid with a fine-point permanent marker on a piece of acet-
ate or a clear plastic report cover. This grid is composed of half-inch
(13mm) squares, which is a good size if you are working with an ordinary
4×6-inch (10mm × 15mm) photo. If you are using a larger photo, such as an
8×10-inch (20cm × 25cm), increase the grid squares to one inch (25mm).
