In-Depth Information
Impressing is a great way to create white lines, such as for whiskers, if you
are working on white paper. Using a sharp tool, such as a stylus or a pen
that has run out of ink (be absolutely sure it's dry!), draw the lines you want
to remain white, pressing hard so that the line makes a dent in the paper.
When you color over it, the pigment won't go into the dent, so the line will
remain white.
You can also scratch out white lines with a craft knife after the colored
drawing is finished. This golden retriever puppy was drawn with pastel and
colored pencils after I impressed the whisker lines.
Blending Colored Pencils
Blending is achieved by rubbing the colors with a tortillion or other blend-
ing tool, just as you would for a graphite pencil drawing.
Burnishing
Burnishing refers to blending colors by rubbing across them with a white
colored pencil. You can then add more layers over the top if desired. This
technique tends to lighten the colors somewhat, so it works well for high-
lighted areas.
