Sometimes you will want to vary the marks you make by changing the pos-
ition of your pencil. Holding the pencil on its side creates softer lines,
which are good for shading large areas. Using the sharp point and holding
the pencil as if you were writing is good for hard lines and details.

The example on the left shows the hard lines made with the point of a pen-
cil; on the right you can see the softer effect of using the pencil on its side.

Shading is what turns a flat circle into a rounded sphere, as shown below.
For your first attempt, work fairly small; you'll find it easier to control. If
you want your baby animals to look solid and rounded, rather than like flat
cut-outs, you will need to use shading to add form, depth and roundness to
every part of the animal's face and body.
