sary adjustments, and when you are happy with the line drawing, lightly transfer only
the necessary lines to the Canson paper. Lift any lines that are too dark with a
kneaded eraser.
USE A LIGHT TOUCH
When using pastel pencils on a delicate subject like baby animals, do not color too
hard. If you get too much pigment on the paper, it will be hard to blend with a cotton
swab. It's easier to add more pigment if the color comes out too light than it is to lift
pigment that has been applied too intensely.
2 Start Adding Color
Lightly refine the drawing. Add a hint of sky by rubbing a cotton swab across a
Spectrum Blue 32F pastel pencil and using the pigment you pick up to “paint” the
background. Erase any blue that overlaps the birds. Add color to the tree branch with
Burnt Sienna and Chocolate pastel pencils, and blend with a cotton swab.
