Cut the end off the click eraser to create a sharp edge. Use the edge to “draw” light
areas in the feathers. Soften the white edges by gently rubbing with the cotton swab
that you used to blend the yellow pastel in Step 2. Resist the urge to add too many in-
dividual lines within the downy feathers or the result can look spiky, not soft. Be
careful when blending so you do not lift too much pastel pigment from the paper.
baby chickadees
The black-capped chickadee is a North American bird that is similar to the
European coal tit. These birds nest early in whatever holes they can find in
tree stumps, fence posts or birdhouses. The mother chickadee has an inter-
esting way of protecting her babies. If an intruder approaches, she puffs
herself up with air and blows it explosively in the trespasser's face.
