keys to drawing small mammals
The small mammals we'll be studying in this section, such as bunnies,
mice, foxes and raccoons, all have different fur types and it's important to
keep this in mind when drawing them. Mice, for example, have short,
smooth fur, while a raccoon's fur is coarse and thick.
Eye position is also important, as foxes and raccoons have forward facing
eyes, while rabbits and mice have eyes placed more to the sides.
Ticked Fur
Raccoons and wild rabbits have fur that looks “salt-and-pepper” due to the
bands of dark and light color on each hair. This is called “ticked” fur. The
image above was drawn with a 2B pencil. I varied the amount of pressure
for the darks and lights, and made sure the pencil strokes tapered at the
ends.
