CHAPTER FIVE
Small Mammals
The small and furry creatures in this chapter are the wild animals that are
most common almost everywhere, although you may have to look carefully
to find them. Some animals, such as rabbits and mice, have domestic variet-
ies that make popular pets. And foxes and raccoons have adapted themselves
well enough that they are a relatively common sight in towns and cities. We
see a lot of foxes near our house. One mother fox had a den with her babies
next to the post office, which is one of the busiest areas in town!
I photographed the baby bunny at left in my garden, which explains why
all the strawberries kept mysteriously disappearing! First, I filled in the ini-
tial layers of colors in pastel using light green, olive green, and raw umber
for the background, and burnt sienna for the bunny, applying the colors with
a sponge applicator (similar to the technique shown on page 13). For the
leaves I used a medium green colored pencil, red-orange colored pencil for
the berries, and lavender for the flowers.
Next, I used various green and brown colored pencils, including olive
green and yellow ochre for the grass and details on the leaves. The centers
of the strawberry blossoms are golden yellow with brown details, and the
petals are shaded with light gray. The strawberries are drawn with red and
alizarin crimson colored pencils, with glazes of yellow over the lighter
areas. The seeds are scratched out with a craft knife, then colored in with
yellow.
For the bunny, I added fur details with various browns, and scratched out
some of the light hairs with a craft knife. I also used a Chinese White
colored pencil to add density to the light hairs around the eye, muzzle, and
breast. The inside of the ear was filled in with a light pink colored pencil,
and shading was added with raw sienna and brown.
The pansies received details with lavender, purple, and magenta colored
pencils, with dark blue lines and yellow centers. The butterfly was drawn
with various blues, plus brown and black details, with the lights scratched
out with the craft knife.
