Getting There & Around
Empresa Hoteleira do Gerês ( 253 262 033) buses go from Braga to Vila do Gerês (€4.25, 1½
hours) hourly during the week, five times on Saturday and four times Sunday.
On weekdays there are eight Salvador buses from Braga to Arcos de Valdevez (€4, one
hour); on weekends, three. Two Salvador buses also go on weekdays from Arcos de
Valdevez to Soajo (€2.75, 50 minutes) and Lindoso (€3.55, one hour) in Parque Nacional
da Peneda-Gerês; there are no buses on weekends.
Paved roads are well maintained throughout the park, but back roads can be be tricky to
navigate.
Serra da Peneda
The lesser-visited, northernmost end of the park is ripe for exploration. Lower-lying fores-
ted hills fade into massive glacially formed peaks, some topped with powerful 21st- cen-
tury windmills; others sit idly watching over vast boulder fields. Old stone houses huddle
in the shadows, wild horses and cattle gather and wander free, and stone fences sprout
haphazardly and wind through wildflower prairies.
