Senhor! (They're goats m'lord!) - a reference to a local story in which Dom Afonso Hen-
riques almost attacked a herd of goats, apparently mistaking them for Moors.
Behind the tower is the rather staid, mostly 15th-century igreja matriz (Rua Cardeal Saraiva;
7.30am-7pm) , sporting a pretty Romanesque doorway.
Museu dos Terceiros

river, the 18th-century Igreja de São Francisco dos Terceiros is now a rambling museum
full of ecclesiastical and folk treasures, although the highlight is the church itself, with its
gilded baroque interior. The Renaissance-style Igreja de Santo António dos Frades , once a con-
vent church, is now a wing of the museum.

Museu do Brinquedo Português
(Casa do Arnado, Largo da Alegria, Arcozelo; adult/student & over 3yr €4.50/2.50; 10am-12.30pm & 2-6pm Tue-
Sun) Dedicated to the Portuguese toy, this museum is in a gorgeous red mansion right after
the Roman bridge in Arcozelo. The focus is on toys made between the late 19th century
and 1986. Displays in different rooms include raw materials and manufacturing tech-
niques, and toys arranged by decade, from brightly painted wooden beach buckets to
papier-mâché dolls and tinplate cannons. There's also a play room, and a toy workshop
accessed through the garden.

NATURE RESERVE
São Pedro de Arcos
( www.lagoas.cm-pontedelima.pt ; 10am-12.30pm Mon-Fri, 2-5.30pm daily) This 350-hectare
nature reserve is set in a wildlife-rich humid zone just north of the Rio Lima. There's a
wildlife interpretation centre and eight hiking trails, ranging from an easy lakeside loop
(1.6km) to a longer 12.5km hike. Get there on the A27, 4km west from Ponte de Lima,
taking exit 3.

space is abundant in Ponte de Lima, but this small, intriguing garden with rose bushes and
lemon-filled trellises is notable because each May it hosts a competition where 12 artists
create temporary gardens built around a theme. The winning garden is chosen in October
