Tourists' Affairs
( 253 253 169; www.thetouristsaffairs.com ) A brand-new tour agency started by a pair of young
enthusiastic locals, an architect and an archaeologist, it specialises in all things Minho.
The free walking tours (at 9.30am and 3pm daily) are a delight - call a day ahead to re-
serve a spot. Other options include a cultural half-day tour and a variety of à la carte tours
of the region.
Festivals & Events
Semana Santa
Elaborate Easter celebrations.
RELIGIOUS
Festas de São João
A pre-Christian solstice bash dressed up to look like holy days, this festival still bursts
with pagan energy. Held on 23 and 24 June, it features medieval folk plays, processions,
dancing, bonfires, spectacular fireworks - and thousands of little pots of basil. Basil is the
symbol of São João (John the Baptist), and traditionally people write poems to loved ones
and then conceal them in their pots. Oddly, locals also bust out squeaky plastic hammers
and whack each other mercilessly.

Reservations are essential during Semana Santa.
