red and yellow blazes, traverses the rock-strewn planalto (high plateau) for 8km to the vil-
lage of Barreiro. From here, you can return 5km by road to your starting point, passing
through Lamas de Ôlo en route.
With your own vehicle it's much easier to explore the network of small hillside villages
within the park's borders. A particularly attractive drive connects Lamas de Ôlo to Ermelo
via the traditional agricultural communities of Pioledo , Varzigueto and Fervença .
Sleeping & Eating
Camping is prohibited in the natural park, and other food and lodging options are scarce.
It's worth inquiring at the Mondim de Basto turismo ( Click here ) for possible bookings of
private houses within the park. Otherwise, your best bet is to use Vila Real or Mondim de
Basto as your base.
Dona Benedita
( 255 381 221; s/d €25/50) In Ermelo, Dona Benedita rents out three rooms, one of which is
an en-suite.
GUESTHOUSE
Tasquinha d'Alice
( 255 381 381; snacks €2.50-6; Oct-Aug) In Bobal, halfway between Lamas de Ôlo and
Mondim de Basto, Tasquinha d'Alice is recommended for its all-day snacks, such as great
alheira as well as salpicão omelette. Staff can also arrange full meals for groups of six or
more with advance notice. The back room has lovely vistas.

(mains €7-11) A good option for food in Ermelo is Sabores do Alvão, a family-run restaurant
by the church with nice valley views and hearty staples like spare ribs cooked in wine and
garlic, served with rice.
